The Bullion Stitch

1 May

My attempt to increase my crochet stitch knowledge led me to the bullion stitch this morning.

I saw this really cute crocheted coral on the Lion brand Yarn stitch finder.

If you aren’t familiar with the bullion stitch, or I think it can also be called a roll stitch, it is yarn over hook 6 times, hook into stitch, yarn over hook and pull through all but one loop, yarn over again and pull through the remaining loops. Seems straight forward enough, doesn’t it? Well, I struggled. This particular pattern requires 3 bullion stitches in each of the 4 chains of the initial circle, so I had kept my tension quite loose to start with so that I could easily see the stitches I was meant to be putting my hook into, but in the end this made the centre of the finished piece messy. I also found pulling the hook through 6 loops challenging and most of the time I pulled them off by hand rather than pulling the hook through.

I wasn’t going to share my dismal attempt at this, but here it is anyway.

imageI think if I wasn’t going in to each chain and just did 12 bullions into the centre of the circle it would be much neater, so I gave that a go, here is my second attempt, with stitches going into circle not chains

Neater centre, but still needs some practice.

I really like this stitch, it is a bit different from the usual crochet stitch.

Here are a few more photos of how it is able to be used….

Love the bullion stitch, done it before with embroidery but did not know it could be done with yarn and hook. Thank you for sharing.

Yes, I really like it too, but it is going to take some practice.
